Teaching

Christopher Bochmann has taught almost without interruption since 1973. In Britain, he was Director of Music at Cranborne Chase School (1973-76) and taught at the Yehudi Menuhin School (1977). In Brazil, he taught at the Escola de Música de Brasília (1978-80). He moved to Portugal in 1980, since when he has taught at the Instituto Gregoriano de Lisboa (1980-1995), the Conservatório Nacional (1981-85), the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (1984-2006) and Évora University (2006-2020). He was also Director of the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (1995-2001) and Dean of the School of the Arts of Évora University (2009-2017).

Theory

Christopher Bochmann has produced various articles on aspects of contemporary musical theory and has written the book A Linguagem Harmónica do Tonalismo (JMP, 2003) which has become an essential text in Portugal for the teaching of harmony; later he added a second complementary book of harmonic analyses (A Linguagem do Tonalismo – Análises e Exercícios, JMP, 2006).

He has also made various revisions of scores of Portuguese music of the 18th and 19th centuries, including the complete opera, Lo Spirito di Contradizione by Jeronimo Lima and a critical edition of the Requiem by Bomtempo.
